BTSCF Newsletter - February 2022

That escalated quickly. What did? Everything! New faces, the Open, a Committed Club, and putting the finishing touches on the RPM 10K Challenge. There’s a lot going on at BTSCF, check it out.

RPM 10K Challenge

Completing 10,000 jumps in 30 days requires commitment, consistency, and discipline. We had 16 athletes attempt the RPM 10K Challenge. In total BTSCF Athletes racked up over 56,000 total jumps. There were a number of athletes that came close to hitting 10K, and 2 of them made it.

Congratulations to Darleen C. for accumulating 10,510 jumps and Jayson P. for hitting 10K exactly during the challenge.

The BTSCF Committed Club

Our first month is in the books. We are challenging our athletes to have 16 or more active days in the month to join our Committed Club. Each month, one Committed Club member will win a prize. Keep an eye on our socials as we will be announcing the February Committed Club members and winner in a few days!

Didn’t make it? No problem, we are at the start of a new month and a blank slate. Made it to into the Club? Great, try to string it to two months!

It is great to see everyone in the gym working hard to move closer to their goals. Keep up the great work!

The NoBull CrossFit Open

This month, the 2022 NoBull CrossFit Open kicked off with a fun 15 Minute AMRAP of Wall Walks, Dumbbell Snatches, and Box Jumps. Our athletes showed up for Friday Night Lights and throughout the weekend to tackle the workout and there were so many who had wins. Last year, the Wall Walk was introduced into the Open and it took some time to figure out the movement. Since then, we have seen the Wall Walk throughout the year giving everyone an opportunity to practice the skill, and that showed!

One week is down, two more to go! Keep it up BTSCF!

BTSCF Feature Athlete

Meet Brenda Rose

When did you start CrossFitting?

November 2021 at Burn the Ships CrossFit.

What brought you to CrossFit?

Before I started CrossFit, I had started doing cardio at PF for two months. I started to plateau and I knew that if I was able to incorporate lifting and other exercises that I would get to the place I wanted to be. I was very nervous to do this on my own, so I researched gyms in the area that could assist me in reaching my goals.

What have you learned from doing CrossFit?

You are stronger than you think (apply that to whatever you need - mental, physical health, etc).

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?

It’s either a full f*** yes or a full f*** no, you decide. Getting in and through the doors in the hardest battle.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Walks with my dog, kayaking, pampering myself (getting hair and nails done #selfcare), spending time with friends and family.

What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?

I’m a Director for a non-profit in NJ that serves individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities residing in the county, services includes: residential options, day habilitation, prevocational training, employment supports, family support services and recreation programs. During the pandemic, all administrators like myself were told to work from home, which I am still doing. However, It has allowed me to stay active while working from home and when I have to go into the programs to do my audits, etc. I am less winded.

We threw some rapid fire questions at Brenda, here’s what she had to say:

Q: What super power would you give yourself?

A: Ability to fly

Q: What's your favorite healthy food?

A: Do cotton candy grapes count???

Q: What's your favorite not so healthy food?

A: Drunken noodles with chicken

Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?

A: The office

Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

A: My natural talent.. my boyfriend is convinced I should be an influencer and have my own blog.

Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?

A: “Do more things that make your heart smile”

Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would you finishing move be called?

A: Omg but I don’t wrestle.. it’s too violent. Maybe “the finisher”.. is that a thing?

Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?

A: I’ve been dreading this question because I look up to all of my peers and learn something different from each of them. I have dipped and dabbled in various class times too and gotten to know so many people. For example, from Mel I learn to keep calm and not to stress before/during the WOD (this is especially helpful when It feels like you’re rowing or biking for eternity), Amanda because of how strong she is and the example that she leads to her daughters which is that women are also capable of being strong,Taryn because she is unapologetically herself and gets shit done (she will really have you out here sweating during these partner WODS). So many others I could keep mentioning but I won’t for the sake of time. Truly have learned and continue to learn from everyone.

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite movement?

A: Favorite is deadlifts (obvi) and one of my least favorites is med ball cleans.. how fitting.. we just did It today and my brain still can’t wrap itself around It.

Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?

A: Um, like everything? The person I am today is not the same person I was in November, mentally or physically. She would be proud. *cues tears*

Q: Anything else you want to share?

A: Thank you Mike, Heather, all the coaches and all the members for making this such a great environment. This community has seriously changed my life.. crying but it’s so on brand of me!
