BTSCF Newsletter - January 2022
Happy New Year! I think now is the last time we can say that before we get to 2023, right? One month down in 2022, and it’s hard to believe but it’s already been a month since we have moved into our new location. There is a lot going on at BTSCF, check it out…
RPM 10K Challenge
This year we have 16 members who have taken the challenge to complete 10,000 jumps in 30 days. The challenge wraps up in a few days so it’s time for that final push.
Collectively Burn the Ships CrossFit has raised $400 for the Iron Compass by participating. The Iron Compass is a charitable initiative that supports a number of organizations that provide at-risk youth with fitness and mentorship opportunities.
BTSCF Committed Club
We have always talked about consistency in what we do at BTSCF. Besides the positive physical, mental, and emotional gains achieved from coming to the gym, we wanted to reward and recognize everyone that is showing up and putting in the work. With that, we’d like to introduce you to The BTSCF COMMITTED CLUB.
Everyone is invited and most importantly encouraged to join the club!
Joining the club is simple. All you have to do is come to class and record your workouts in SugarWOD. The goal is have 16 or more active days in the month. That’s it! You’re in the Committed Club. After each month we will recognize the Committed Club. Committed Club members for that month will be entered into a drawing, and one will win a prize valued at $50. Note: While your coaches can also join the Committed Club by logging 16 or more active days in SugarWod, they are not eligible to win the prize.
Each month will reset, so if you miss a month, that’s ok, just get the next one.
On top of the monthly recognition and prizes, at the end of the year, any member who made the Committed Club every month will be entered into another drawing. We want to reward this consistency so the prize for this drawing will be worth $500!
Our first month will be this February, so beginning February 1, any active day you log in SugarWOD will count towards your total. We’ll announce everyone in the Committed Club and the drawing winner for February in the first week of March.

The CrossFit Open
The start of the CrossFit Games season is upon us. For a select few in the world, that means this is the first step in a journey toward the CrossFit Games. For most of this, this is our annual fitness check up. This is where we come together as a community to celebrate the work we all put in every day. We test ourselves and see where we are. The Open begins on February 24 and will last for 3 weeks, with divisions for all experience levels. BTSCF will hold our Friday Night Lights events each week of The Open.
If you’re looking to sign up for The Open, you can do so by following this link.
If you’re not sure or if you have any questions, please reach out to one of your coaches.
BTSCF Feature Athlete
Meet Janette Witschel
When did you start CrossFitting?
I started in July, 2021 at Burn the Ships.
What brought you to CrossFit?
I was looking for a gym, drove past the Milford location and stopped in. I had no previous information about CrossFit.
What have you learned from doing CrossFit?
I’ve learned that nothing is impossible. I was pretty intimidated by the on ramp. As I was on the assault bike I watched people lifting weights and thought I will not be able to do that. I was so wrong!
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?
Just start, think about the benefits, mental and physical. It all starts with one class, then another, then another. The program works for everyone. No matter your age, gender, or athletic ability. Burn the Ships will modify any workout to your comfort level, and you will grow from there.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I spend time with my family and four dogs. When I’m not walking my pooches, you’ll find me with a crochet hook in my hand.
What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?
I’m a retired middle school teacher. Since I’ve joined CrossFit have definitely have more energy and structure in my life.
We threw some lightning round questions at Janette, here’s what she had to say:
Q: What super power would you give yourself?
A: I’d give myself to ability to communicate with anyone, no matter what language or culture.
Q: What's your favorite healthy food?
A: I love spinach shakes; I have one every day.
Q: What's your favorite not so healthy food?
A: French fries, love them!
Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?
A: Ghosts on CBS, they all seem very funny to me.
Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
A: Cooking. I love to feed people.
Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?
A: Don’t look back, just look forward.
Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would you finishing move be called?
A: I have no idea; I don’t know anything about wresting. Editors Note: Since Janette enjoys crocheting, we’ll just go ahead and say her finishing move will be called “The Locking Slip Knot.”
Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?
A: There are so many people, it would be hard to name just one.
Q: What are you favorite and least favorite movements?
A: Favorite, any of the stretches. Least favorite, the assault bike.
Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?
A: I don’t know all of the vocabulary, so here goes, lift weights on the bar bell. I have lifted up to 80lbs. I never thought I would be able to do that.
