BTSCF Newsletter - January 2023
New year, new goals. Time always seems to speed up and we are already through the first month of 2023. There is no better time that now to ask yourself if you’re heading in the right direction to meet your goals or if you need to make an adjustment. Self assessment and adjustments are all part of the process. Check out what is happening at BTSCF this month.
Nutrition Seminar
We held a new Nutrition Seminar on January 7th to discuss the basics of Nutrition and how what we eat impacts our performance in the gym and our overall health.
The first part of Greg Glassman’s definition in 100 words is:
“Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.”
In a nutshell, it’s important to eat real food and in the appropriate quantities.
During the seminar we defined what food is and provided some tips to get started improving your nutrition. If you’re interested in one on one nutrition coaching we can help. You can get started with a Free Nutrition Consultation to learn about how we can help. To schedule your consultation, click here to email Heather.
The CrossFit Open
We are a few short weeks away from the 2023 CrossFit Open. The CrossFit Open is an annual test of fitness for yourself. For the elite it is the first step in qualifying for the CrossFit Games. For most of us, it is an opportunity to see where we stack up in relation to our peers around the world.
The Open begins on February 16. To sign up for The Open, click here.
BTSCF Intramural Open
This year we have some fun things planned for The Open. Our goal is to bring everyone together to have fun throughout the three weeks of The Open. We will be creating 4 teams comprised of all BTSCF Members and every member will have the chance to earn points for their team.
At the end of The Open, the 4 team captains (Addy, Frank, Heather, and Jon T.) will split 1,000 burpees. The captain whose team comes in first will only have to do 100 burpees. The second place captain will do 200, third will do 300, and last will do 400.
Here are the ways you can earn points for your team each week:
5 Points Complete The Open Workout during Friday Night Lights (4:30pm).
5 Points Wear your team’s designated color to do the workout.
2 Points Officially log your score on the CF Games Website.
3 Points Check into BTSCF on Facebook while at Friday Night Lights.
2 Points Bring a Non-Member Family or Friend to hang out and watch.
3 Points Earning a Top 3 Spot in your BTSCF Division.
The divisions we will use are male and female: 13-17, 18-34, 35-49, 50+
Stay tuned for the announcement of teams as we get closer to the start of The Open on February, 2/16.
BTSCF Feature Athlete
Meet Alyssa Teribury
When did you start CrossFitting?
2016
If different, when did you start at BTSCF?
September 2022
What brought you to CrossFit?
I have a background in distance running and ran throughout high school and college. I felt pressure to be smaller and lighter and made poor choices for my body for several years. One day, I decided to join a box, change my “cardio-bunny” ways and the rest is history.
What have you learned from doing CrossFit?
Recovery is important: if you press on too hard for too long, you’ll fall apart.
Comparison is stupid: everyone struggles with something.
It’s nice to be nice: there’s no better feeling than encouraging/congratulating someone.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I still love to run! I have a three-year-old, so my son’s latest interests are my latest interests. Right now it’s all about Paw Patrol, cars and trucks and dinosaurs.
What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?
I’m a public relations specialist for school districts and BOCES across New York State. The movements we do in the gym help undo the damage I cause from hunching like a Gargoyle at my laptop all day. I’m primarily in my car or at a desk now, but I never know when I’ll need to climb on the roof to get a bird’s eye view photo of a group of students or move tables to set up for a press event.
We threw some rapid fire questions at Alyssa, here’s what she had to say:
Q: What superpower would you give yourself?
A: Mind reader
Q: What's your favorite healthy food?
A: A big ass salad
Q: What's your favorite not-so-healthy food?
A: Every single appetizer and three raspberry Cosmos from Two Rivers Grille, please!
Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?
A: How I Met Your Mother
Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
A: World’s worst karaoke singer
Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?
A: “Its okay if you sleep on it.”
Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would your finishing move be called?
A: The Sonya Blade
Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?
A: Everyone at the gym is amazing! I tend to go to 6:30 p.m. classes the most – shout out to that fun crew. 😊
Q: What is your favorite and least favorite movement?
A: Favorite: any type of squat, burpees. Least favorite: rowing, wall balls
Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?
A: Wall walks and handstands on a wall. Many thanks to Jon T. and Walter for that!
