BTSCF Newsletter - October 2022

Halloween got here fast didn’t it? We’ll keep on rolling toward Thanksgiving. There are a lot of things happening at BTSCF. Check it out…

BTSCF Halloween Party

It’s one of the days we most look forward to. Costumes, partner workouts, and a party. As always, our annual Halloween Party was a ton of fun. The day started with our classes taking on a challenging Halloween Workout consisting of Single Arm Russian Kettle Bell Swings, Goblet Squats, and finishing the workout with synchronized air squats. How many rounds? For Halloween, 31 of course!

Nutritional Landmine Season

As the holidays approach, we are all faced with the challenges of what to eat. We want to be able to enjoy the holidays, including the food. At BTSCF, we have the resources and tools to help you navigate the holidays and beyond with our 1:1 nutrition coaching. Whether you’re looking to lose body fat or gain weight by building lean muscle, we can help you on your path to your goals. You can still even enjoy the holidays.

If you’re interested in 1:1 nutrition coaching, please do not hesitate to reach out to Heather or Mike.

PJ Stone Challenge

At this point, you’ve probably been living under a rock if you haven’t heard about the PJ Stone Challenge yet. The good news is all you have to do is sign up now by clicking here, then use the rock you’ve been living under for the race. It’s a lot of fun, a great physical and mental challenge, and you’ll be happy you did it!

The Stone Challenge will take place on Sunday, November 13th.

The gym will be closed the day of the race and the workout of the day will be to complete either the Stone Challenge or Provocation. If you have questions about the race, please talk to any of our coaches for more information.

BTSCF Trivia Night

Calling all members! Join us on November 19th at 5pm for Trivia Night at the gym! There is a sign up sheet on the desk. Find 3 other people to be on your team and come up with a team name. The team that wins will walk away with $200 to split however they would like.

Come show us how smart you are! Questions will cover a wide range of topics!

Thanksgiving Workout

We love seeing everyone join us Thanksgiving morning for a workout before we celebrate the holiday!

Classes will be held at 8am and 9am. There will be no afternoon classes. We hope to see everyone there!

BTSCF Feature Athlete

Meet Kristen Lake

When did you start CrossFitting?

March/April 2022 at BTSCF

What brought you to CrossFit?

I was very bored with my basement workouts and felt very isolated from the community. I would see BTSCF on the way to Walmart every weekend and decided one day to give it a try!

What have you learned from doing CrossFit?

More than anything, I have learned how important it is to have a good support system in order to be successful. There is no new CrossFit skill that I have learned and developed without the encouragement and support of the coaches and members of BTSCF.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?

DO IT. Joining CrossFit is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have dabbled in many different fitness arenas (yoga, karate, Zumba, OrangeTheory, tabata, etc.) and CrossFit is very unexpectedly, hands down, my favorite.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Most of my free time is spent working on my husband’s and my hobby farm. We care for goats and chickens and are looking to expand! When not doing chores, I like watching movies and playing video games with my husband, and reading. I also like to draw and am currently illustrating a children’s book!

What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?

I am a County Executive Director for the USDA’s Farm Service Agency. Being that I work over an hour from the gym, CrossFit helps me clock out on time (which is good for mental health) and helps me keep positive during the work day because I have something to look forward to at the end of the day.

We threw some rapid fire questions at Kristen, here’s what she had to say:

Q: What super power would you give yourself?

A: Time travel!

Q: What's your favorite healthy food?

A: Yogurt with granola.

Q: What's your favorite not so healthy food?

A: POPCORN!

Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?

A: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

A: Having the least profitable, but cutest/happiest hobby farm in the world.

Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?

A: “Stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit. It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.” John Greenleaf Whittier (hope a quote counts!)

Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would you finishing move be called?

A: The Egg Cracker

Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?

A: Jon T! While I LOVE all the coaches, Jon T has helped me a lot developing new skills. Every time that I have thought to myself, “I can’t do that,” Jon T has helped me leave class having learned something that I thought was impossible (rope climb, handstands, etc).  He also plays the best music, especially when I’m the only one in class at 5:30pm on Fridays!

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite movement?

A: My favorite is kipping pullups. Feels like a roller coaster. I hope to get better at these! Least favorite is snatches!

Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?

A: SO MANY THINGS but most recently a pistol squat. That has been a goal of mine for some time now.

Q: Anything else you want to share?

A: I cannot put into words how grateful I am to be a part of BTSCF. I have been a member of many different gyms and teams and I have never felt more part of a community than I do here. I absolutely love how everyone encourages one another to be and do their best. From the time I walked in here I have been welcomed with open arms by everyone. I never expected this sort of experience from BTSCF and was prepared to  get bored and quit within a few months. Thank you for proving this and all of my self-doubts wrong. You are a highlight of my day and truly make the impossible possible.
