BTSCF Newsletter - May 2022
In a blink, we are through May and we’ve hit the unofficial start of summer. Take a look at BTSCF this month…
Check in For Charity
We asked for your help and you came through! Thanks to you and all of the check ins, we have raised $270 for the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deer Park. We could not have done this without you!
As far as the pet adoption event, it was a bummer that we had to postpone but the safety of the animals is the top priority. Stay tuned as we reschedule a new date for the fall when the temperatures will be lower and safer for the animals to visit us.
5th Annual Food Drive
We announced our 5th Annual Food Drive which begins June 1st. Click here for more details.
Memorial Day Murph
At BTSCF, and in many gyms across the country and around the world, Memorial Day means “Murph.” While we honor Lt. Michael P. Murphy (SEAL) and the sacrifice he made, Memorial Day is a day to pause and remember that there have been so many who have lost their lives in service to our country. We have the freedom to live our lives the way we do because of those sacrifices, and that is what makes completing “Murph” a special challenge.
It was so great to see everyone who came out to tackle this challenging workout. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
There is no thank you big enough for the service men and women who have lost their lives. There is no sacrifice greater, and it was our privilege to honor them.
BTSCF Feature Athlete
Meet Kristine Goin
When did you start CrossFitting?
I started CrossFit at BTSCF in June 2019. Two months after my second lung surgery to remove a metastatic nodule!
What brought you to CrossFit?
My health and an attempt to stay as healthy and fit as possible.
What have you learned from doing CrossFit?
I've learned soreness in places I've never known existed. LOL! I've learned I'm capable of doing things I never thought I could!
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?
It's fun and if I can get out there and get at it, anyone can!
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read, float down the river, sit by the fire pit with my John Boy, party with my dogs and enjoy the fresh air!
What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?
I'm a grievance supervisor in a prison. Since my amputation CrossFit has helped me to stay strong and allow me to traverse the terrain of the prison and handle going up and down stairs, as weird as that may sound to some.
We threw some lightning round questions at Kristine, here’s what she had to say:
Q: What super power would you give yourself?
A: The ability to grow back limbs.
Q: What's your favorite healthy food?
A: Grilled fish tacos.
Q: What's your favorite not so healthy food?
A: Hudson Valley tacos and empanadas.
Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?
A: Friends
Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
A: Having the coolest prosthetic leg 🦿
Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?
A: Pick yourself up and keep moving, the best is yet to come!
Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would you finishing move be called?
A: The Drop Kick Murphy!
Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?
A: Everyone! Everyone has their advantages and disadvantages. I look to you all for inspiration.
Q: What is your favorite and least favorite movement?
A: I hate burpees! I love deadlifts.
Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?
A: Wall walks and 140#dead lifts
Q: Anything else you want to share?
A: I just want to share how humbling it is to be a part of this CrossFit family. CrossFit has given me my life back after my Osteo Sarcoma relapse in 2015 followed by an amputation, and three lung resections from metastatic disease. Without CrossFit and my CrossFit family I truly believe I would be in a dark place. CrossFit has been my lifeline outside of family. And I want to thank you for being a part of my life.
