BTSCF Newsletter - February 2021

Have we seen the end of the snow yet for this winter? Who knows, but we definitely have warmer weather coming soon, as well as a Stone Challenge and the Open to look forward to. Here’s what is going on this month at BTSCF.

Share The Love!

We have a special offer we are running from now through March 15! Is there someone in your life that you think would enjoy and benefit from doing CrossFit? Share the Love with them and you can get a pretty cool benefit too!

Here’s how it works. Tell your family member, friend, or that special someone about us. Have them reach out to schedule their FREE intro class. If they sign up for a membership and tell us that you sent them, they will get a FREE MONTH added to their account and you will also get a FREE MONTH added to yours as well!

Want to know the coolest thing about this offer? There’s no limit! You can send one person, or you can send ten.

This special referral offer applies to brand new memberships only.

Are You Signed Up for THE OPEN?

It’s been a long wait but the OPEN is almost here! The Open is an annual fitness test for everyone in the world and is a great opportunity to see where you are with your skills. While The Open is the first step to find the Fittest on Earth, it truly is a competition for everyone! As always, there is are Rx and Scaled options. This year, Adaptive and Foundations options are also being added.

CrossFit just made a recent post of an old Open Workout to show an example of the differences between Rx, Scaled, and Foundations:

Open Workout 11.3

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 5 minutes of:

Rx - Squat Clean & Jerk (165/110)

Scaled - Squat Clean & Jerk (95/65)

Foundations - Power Clean, Front Squat, & Jerk (22/15)

The Open will be 3 weeks long and begins on March 11. Each Thursday night at 8pm Eastern, workouts will be released and you’ll have until Monday night at 8pm Eastern to complete and submit your scores.

We will have opportunities on Friday’s and Sunday’s to complete the workouts. If you are unable to make it to the gym during these times, just reach out to us and we will figure it out.

If you’re already signed up, great! If not, it’s not too late. You can sign up by going to games.crossfit.com. Talk to any of our coaches for more details or if you have any questions.

The Port Jervis Stone Challenge 2….Take 2

In 2019, the 1st Port Jervis Stone Challenge took place to benefit the Port Jervis Outdoor Club and was a huge success. In 2020, the Challenge was supposed to be back, but as with most things last year, plans had to change. Here’s to Take Two, of the Port Jervis Stone Challenge 2! The Challenge will be taking place on March 13, 2021. Burn the Ships CrossFit is proud to be a sponsor of the event.

For details and to sign up, click here!

So what is the Stone Challenge 2? It’s pretty simple. You sign up, then you pick out a rock. You paint the rock so you can identify it when it is among other rocks. You’ll run down a mountain to pick up your rock, then carry it back up to the top. Winners are determined by the combination of how heavy their rock is and how quickly they complete the race.

Since there’s always an opportunity to do some good in the world, we will also be accepting food donations when you check in at the event. We’re asking racers to fill a brown bag with non-perishable food items and bring it with them to the race.

Coach’s Picks

This month we hit up Paulie to tell us about his podium of cheat meals. Check out his go to meals when he’s going to cheat.

Spirit of the Games - Pizza takes this spot. You just cannot leave pizza off of the list.

Dark Horse - Smoked Meats! I just love me some brisket or some ribs.

Podium Picks

3rd Place: Ice cream. There really isn’t much more to say other than it is ice cream, and who doesn’t love ice cream?

2nd Place: Mexican Food, but specifically real chicken tacos. This is one where I always say just a few, and then I find myself 6 later….

1st Place: Buffalo Wings. Fried. Crispy. But do not bread them! I’ve been known to come home with a dozen and house them.

When did you start CrossFitting?

June 2018 at BTSCF.

What brought you to CrossFit?

How much friends loved it and wanting to increase strength.

What have you learned from doing CrossFit?

Perseverance - just keep going, one rep at a time!

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about starting CrossFit?

Just try it! You don’t need to be in great shape when you start out. It is for everyone.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Take long walks, spend time with family and friends.

What do you do for work and how has CrossFit impacted how you do your job?

I manage the office for a construction company. CrossFit has given me more energy throughout the day. I actually volunteer to help load 50 pound salt bags if help is needed. It’s like a mini mid day workout!

Ginger on her 1 Year Anniversary of CrossFit. June 2019

We asked Ginger some rapid fire questions, here is what she had to say:

Q: What super power would you give yourself?

A: Strength.

Q: What's your favorite healthy food?

A: Avocado.

Q: What's your favorite not so healthy food?

A: Peanut butter and hot fudge sundaes.

Q: What TV Sitcom family or group would you be a member of?

A: The Brady Bunch

Q: If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

A: Definitely wouldn’t be singing!

Q: If you could write your own fortune cookie fortune, what would it say?

A: Focus on the road ahead, rear view mirrors are small for a reason.

Q: If you were a professional wrestler, what would your finishing move be called?

A: The Ginginator

Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration at BTSCF?

A: Kristine. Whenever I’m not sure if I can keep going, I think of what she has overcome and how hard she works.

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite movement?

A: Love running. Least favorite used to be the bike, but I’d have to say burpees have moved into last place now.

Q: What is the one thing you've done at BTSCF that your old self wouldn't ever believe?

A: 95 lb. overhead squats. I always ran and played soccer, but had never done much with weights.
